Folks, I am in no way excusing the Left. How can many of you read me for so long and think that? They started it with their identity politics and conspiracy theories. But I do not want to live in a right wing version of same! I think both radicalizations, left and right, are largely a response to the condition of liquid modernity. I think the only hope we have to pull away from the abyss is Christianity reasserted in a strong way — and not the Christian Nationalist way. Any political program that requires me to hate Jews or racial minorities is absolutely unacceptable to me. It’s why I have been strongly against leftist identity politics in all its manifestations all my life. That has called forth these demons on the Right. It falls to Christians of the Right like me to say NO, there is a better way. The postwar consensus is dead, and I don’t know what’s coming next. But I will do everything in my power to keep these racists and fascist from seizing the Right, even as I acknowledge good riddance to the pre Trump GOP. It is not the case that to defeat our enemies we have to become the right wing version of them.

Rod, I say this with nothing but affection and respect: I think you've lost the plot in the last few months and in the process, ironically, gone a little off the rails like Tucker...though in a different way.

It's not that the concerns you're raising about this supposed threat from certain precincts of the Right are imaginary or silly. Rather, it's more a matter of perspective and priorities.

Here's a news summary from this morning on events in Minneapolis:

>>>>Rioters in North Minneapolis targeted federal vehicles belonging to the FBI and ICE, vandalizing them with graffiti, breaking into trunks and hoods, and using a pickup truck with a tow rope to rip open a weapons locker. They stole an FBI rifle, ammunition, and sensitive documents including agents' full names, phone numbers, emails, addresses, call signs, maps of immigration detainee transport locations, and National DNA Database requests. Independent journalist Nick Sortor captured video of one theft showing the thief's face and the license plate of a black Ford Taurus with Minnesota plate SMV 596, while Andrew Mercado livestreamed the documents before locking his social media accounts.<<

This morning Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to deal with the deteriorating security situation in Minnesota even as yesterday an armed anti-government militia group was sighted roaming the streets of Philadelphia.

The hard fact is that we've arrived at a mindboggling point where one entire political party and its media propaganda arm are now taking sides with and running cover for the forces promoting lawlessness, disorder, and anarchy. I mean, how do you deal with such a situation?

My point in bringing this up is to suggest that some of us are having a difficult time working ourselves into a lather about assorted nobodies, fringe figures, kooks, and gasbags on the Right who have no actual power and no prospect of getting any when we're watching in real time the makings of an actual insurrection on the part of forces loosely (and imprecisely) called the Left that not only have real power but are poised to get more.

Nor at this moment in history can we muster a whole lot of enthusiasm for the circular firing squad that the Purity Brigade on the Right wants to promote in the name of purging the movement from the antisemites who seem to lurk under every bed in the minds of some. Nor is the first question in our minds when we wake up in the morning whether JD Vance has finally disavowed Tucker Carlson.

Don't get me wrong. You've got a great substack here and certainly don't need me to tell you what to write about. My comment above is only intended to contextualize my difference of view on the subject that seems to preoccupy you lately.
