Oh my, that was such a beautiful read...not least because Roscoe reminds me so much of our scruffy black labradoodle Milo who died last March at the age of 14. He chased squirrels too but didn’t eat chicken shit but other things just as bad...
Powerful, Rod! I wept as I remembered my dog, Charley, helping me through the lowest point of my life (divorce & custody battle) by loving on me. Then, I had to put him down. I hated that day above all others.
Oh Rod, I'm so very sorry. I know what you feel. I'm so sorry...
This week I have been looking for a painting of the Last Supper to put in my dining room. I was leaning towards the one painted by Peter Paul Rubens, because of the dog in it (loyalty vis a vis Judas). You just sealed it for me - that's the one I'm getting. God bless you.
Beautiful. I always send a little drawing to bereaved dog people that depicts St Peter with his list and a little dog running joyfully through the gate, intending to jump into the arms of a new arrival. Caption: “So you’re little Bobbie; well, Rex has been going on and on about you for the last 50 years.” Roscoe will be waiting for you.
Rod - I am so sorry to hear this news. As you may recall a few years ago, when you wrote a piece about Roscoe, I made some comments about Buddy, the dog everyone thought we should get rid of, but when we finally had to put him to sleep (in 2014) was the dog everyone was sorry to lose. It's tough but eventually you have to let them go.
Frankly, I believe that dogs do go to heaven in some manner that we don't understand and that you will see him again.
Animals are like that. They will be there for you when no one else is. I have been lucky in my life to have a Goldie, Maggie, and a Bella. I now have Duchess my loveable muttdog. Her greatest love is to go to sleep with my wife and I and then snuggle up to who ever is on the couch.

One of the finest tributes to man or dog I’ve ever read. And yes I fully agree that dogs are gifts from God.
Understand completely. They steal your heart.

Oh Rod, I am so sorry. Be good to yourself. (And I will go hug Heidi now in honor of Roscoe.)
Goodbye, baby dog!! 🐾🐾 🌈 ❤️ 😢😭
You made him happy and that is the best thing you could hope for.

Bye bye sweet Roscoe 😢 so sad…

Beautiful. That photo of the two of you at the bottom of the post is just wonderful. RIP, good boy.
Thank you.
So sorry for the loss of your beloved Roscoe.
I recall C.S. Lewis’ pain at the loss of his wife - he wrote (I paraphrase) about this pain as “the price we pay for love” . So true, so very true…
